Who would have thought that the Rolling Stones and Systema, or any other martial art, could be mentioned in the same breath? But trust me, their influence can have a profound impact if you let it.

I still remember my teenage years, listening to Satisfaction and Jumpin’ Jack Flash on the radio. The cool riffs and matching lyrics captured my attention. Back then, I never expected them to make it past 40. Yet here we are, approaching March 2024, and the Stones are set to perform in Orlando… in their 80s! How is this even possible?

Divine intervention may be at play, especially when it comes to Keith Richards. But beyond that, there’s a common thread woven throughout their 60+ years of history. It’s a characteristic that has also fueled the success of writers, CEOs, athletes, and musicians alike. And if we embrace it, it can elevate us to our fullest potential.

Throughout my career as an Acupuncture Physician, I’ve treated over 45,000 patients, spanning ages 8 to 88, from billionaires to those struggling to pay their bills. Both the “successful” and the “unsuccessful” share a major characteristic with Mick, Keith, and Woody.

Passion is what drives them all.

The patients who consider themselves successful approach each day with an intense desire to excel in their craft. They combine hard work with discipline, consistently embracing their passion without end.

One particularly remarkable example is Sifu Dan Inosanto, a renowned martial artist and student of Bruce Lee who currently trains with exceptional Systema teacher, Martin Wheeler. Even in his 80s, Master Inosanto maintains a passion for learning something new. He could easily rest on his laurels, but he continues to train, serving as an inspiration for the rest of us.

The Rolling Stones possess wealth beyond measure. They hold the record for the most hits in rock history and have secured their place in the Hall of Fame. So why embark on a tour at 80 years old? It’s because, when you live with passion, you must. It’s an indescribable drive that compels you to play, train, write, and practice until it is time to cross the Great River.

Want to become a better martial artist? Embrace your training, commit to every class, push beyond your limits, and above all, live with passion.

Just like the Rolling Stones.
